TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – During the June 27 Monclova Township Trustees meeting, trustees discussed exploring their options for improving fire services in the community.
One of the main talking points was whether the township should provide more funding to the Monclova fire department or cut everything and use another community’s.
“Like many organizations, we had staffing issues. Especially the fire department, which causes delays in services. We seek to improve services to our constituents,” said Chuch Hoecherl, a township administrator.
Administrators tell 13abc that they want to provide the best possible services with the fastest possible response time to residents. Thus, they explore options to improve and possibly replace the services they have.
Hoecherl says recent fires in the township have raised concerns about the department’s ability to handle increased needs.
“We have mutual aid agreements with a number of surrounding communities, and due to a staffing situation here, I understand this is causing delays to our truck leaving the station here. Unfortunately, one of our other surrounding communities responded and got there before us,” Hoecherl said.
Fire Chief Kevin Bernhard tells 13abc that there are times when Monclova Fire arrives on the scene first, he says that’s how shared services work. Bernhard cites staffing issues as the reason for the delays, but he says stopping Monclova Fire services would not solve the problem as fire service staffing issues are nationwide. He would prefer to receive increased funding to pay a competitive salary and hire enough people.
According to Bernhard, shutting down the Monclova Fire Department and going with Springfield Township or another department wouldn’t solve the problem, it would just put the station’s 50 or so employees out of work.
Instead, he would rather receive the budget to pay a full salary and hire enough people.
Township administrators say more conversations with the fire department are needed to determine the best course of action.
