Police officer fights for his life after attack on SAPS members and firefighter official

A policeman was shot dead early this morning. The incident happened at 2:15 a.m. on Sunday, October 31.

Police and emergency services have been informed of an incident in which a vehicle veered off the road and fell into a river, resulting in the death of a driver.

One occupant survived. While officials were busy at the scene, a group of about five suspects emerged from nearby bushes and indiscriminately shot them.

The suspects demanded firearms and bulletproof vests from the members. Police officer fights for his life in hospital following multiple gunshot wounds he sustained after being shot by suspects who stole his duty firearm, cell phone and keys of an official car.

Three members of the SAPS as well as a fire and rescue manager survived the incident unharmed.

A government vehicle was damaged in the incident. The suspects then fled on foot.

A case of armed robbery with an additional charge of attempted murder has been opened, hence the manhunt.

The provincial commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lt. Gen. Semakaleng Manamela, strongly condemned the attack on officials rendering their service to the victims and ordered the swift arrest of the suspects as well as the recovery of the stolen firearm and keys to the state vehicle.
