Mumbai: The Mumbai Fire Department has sent a reminder to companies and commercial establishments to complete their fire audit by the end of July. Companies that fail to comply will face action, firefighters have warned. Over the past six months, firefighters have sent formal notices to 151 buildings for non-compliance with fire safety measures.

According to the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Act 2006, it is compulsory for owners/occupiers to provide “Form B” issued by an approved agency twice a year, in January and July. This concerns the maintenance of existing fire prevention and life safety measures in the structure. However, despite repeated reminders to comply with the law, some companies do not. Over the past two years, 39% of high-rise buildings have had their fire-fighting systems not operational.

Mumbai Fire Brigade inspected 329 buildings randomly between November 2021 and April 2022. Of these, notices of non-compliance with fire safety measures were issued for 151 buildings. “If they don’t meet the standards after 120 days, legal action is taken against the company. Commercial buildings, such as offices or shopping malls, usually appoint a fire audit agency to regularly inspect their fire suppression systems, a fire official said.
