Mayking Fire Department in Letcher County offers free showers and laundry services

WYMT Mountain News Weekend Edition at 11 p.m. Saturday

LETCHER COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) – From cooking home-cooked meals to distributing supplies, the Mayking Fire Department in Letcher County has received help from across the Commonwealth and beyond .

“Ohio, Indiana, it’s just everywhere,” said Mayking Fire Department Deputy Chief Charles Polly. “Firefighters, churches, disaster relief groups, pretty much anyone you could think of.”

On Saturday, the department also received a large donation from Whitesburg residents, though not the same Whitesburg the department knows.

Heather and Brian Necessary from Whitesburg, Tennessee went to the Mayking Fire Department to deliver water, food and cleaning supplies.

“It’s good to help others when they’re unlucky,” said Brian Necessary. “I hope they don’t have to reciprocate, but we are the willing state, that’s what we are here for.”

Necessary said the couple managed to raise $3,000 with the help of friends and family to help buy the 260 cases of water they dropped off at the fire department.

Thanks to the generosity of local and statewide organizations, the Mayking Fire Department offers a wide variety of services to the residents of Letcher County.

“We’re basically one of the more centered fire departments, we’re right off the 119 freeway, which is the main highway through the county, so we decided to try and get something to helping citizens not just in Mayking but all of Letcher County,” Polly said.

With the help of the City of Whitesburg, the Kentucky Dream Center, and WaterStep, the department is able to provide a shower trailer, washer and dryer trailer, and water purification system to residents of Letcher County. .

“I feel like people here think that if they can get clean laundry or take a nice hot shower, they feel productive because there’s so much devastation and they don’t really know where to start, it gives them a way to feel they are in control,” said Nichole Stidham, a volunteer with the department.

Fire department officials added that these are just some of the many services they are happy to provide to people in times of need.

“As the fire department, we want to do more than fight fires and get to the emergency room, we want to make Letcher County a better place,” Polly said. “Being strong in Letcher County is about participating and helping in any way you can.”

The Mayking Fire Department will provide these services from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. each day.

These services will be available for the foreseeable future.
