Jamaica Fire Department Plans to Increase Staff – Jamaica Information Service

The Jamaica Fire Brigade (JFB) has announced plans to increase its strength through the addition of new positions over the coming years.

Talk with JIS News, JFB Commissioner Stewart Beckford said the JFB’s complement of uniformed and non-uniformed personnel stands at around 2,164, with the number of uniformed firefighters hovering around 1,868.

“We are currently undertaking a restructuring exercise and this will result in additional numbers in terms of overall headcount. There are 151 additional new positions to be created over the next two fiscal years, revealed Commissioner Beckford.

Those interested in joining the Jamaica Firefighters are encouraged to visit his website at jfb.gov.jm , where relevant information on eligibility and the application process can be found.

Eligibility criteria include a minimum of five Caribbean Certificate of Secondary Education (CSEC) subjects or equivalent.

However, the commissioner said having specialist skills gives candidates a greater advantage.

“We are also interested in people who may have certain skills that we desire, for example mechanics and drivers, as these are always in demand; craftsmen, electricians, plumbers and that kind of skill. We are interested in people who have them,” the JFB chief said.

The JFB remains committed to fulfilling its mandate to save lives and protect property.
