MUMBAI: A fire broke out on the 14th floor of a major luxury residential tower on Bandstand, Bandra (west) on Monday evening. Although no civilians were injured, a firefighter suffered minor injuries from suffocation while battling the blaze. The fire was brought under control around 9:30 p.m. Officials said the tower’s firefighting system was outdated.
The firefighter, Kaushal Rajput (31), was rushed to Bhabha Municipal Hospital.
A senior fire official said repair work was underway between the 13th and 14th floors of Jivesh Terrace, a 21-story ground-floor structure near actor Shah Rukh Khan’s bungalow, Mannat.
Firefighters said the blaze, reported around 7.45pm, was a “level 2” fire, which could be handled by the local fire station. Eight fire engines were put into service.
“The firefighting system was not working… All residents were evacuated,” a fire official said, adding that a detailed investigation would be carried out and based on the findings, a notice will be sent. to the building.
“The exact cause of the fire is not known. We have cut the electrical connection as a precaution,” the official said. Officials added that residents moved to the building’s basement parking lot. .
Fire chief Hemant Parab said everyone on the upper floors had been evacuated and firefighters entered the apartment where the fire started,
A local said the fire appeared to be from the air conditioning units in one of the apartments.
Former Bandra business manager Asif Zakaria said the fire appears to have been caused by a short circuit. “It is one of the most important buildings in the locality. Luckily no one was trapped and the firefighters arrived on time,” Zakaria said.
Bandra (West) BJP MP Ashish Shelar said on Twitter that firefighters, police and other authorities were on hand to put out the blaze.
